Karen is an artist in several mediums, moose hair embroidery and tufting, basketry, quilting and beadwork to name a few. Now with the encouragement of her friend Ilona Stanley "Rainbow Woman", she has added Birch Bark Biting.
This extraordinary art form, practiced by both Ojibwe and Cree, produce delicate designs bitten into birch bark. Pieces of peeled bark are folded several times, placed into the mouth and bitten. The folded bark produces symmetrical patterns when the piece is unfloded. These designs were often used as patterns for quill and beadwork before there was paper.
